Plant Highlights: Elegant clusters of fragrant purple flowers • Flowers in summer on a more compact climber • Ideal for pergolas, arches and walls • Attractive to bees and other pollinators • Excellent for smaller gardens
Overview
Wisteria frutescens 'Longwood Purple', commonly known as American Wisteria, is a graceful deciduous climber producing hanging clusters of rich purple flowers during summer. Compared with many Asian wisterias, it has a more restrained growth habit, making it a good choice where space is limited or a less vigorous climber is preferred.
Supplied in a 2 litre pot at approximately 65 cm tall, this young plant is ready to be trained onto pergolas, arches, trellis or sunny walls, where it will gradually develop into an attractive flowering feature.

Growing Guide
Plant in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil and a sturdy support. Full sun encourages the best flowering. Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods, particularly in the first few growing seasons.
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base with organic matter to help conserve moisture, keeping the mulch away from the stem.
Pruning
Prune after flowering and again during the dormant season to maintain a tidy framework and encourage the development of flowering spurs. Tie in young shoots as they grow to establish an even covering over the support.
Wildlife
The fragrant flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, making this a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Why We Love It
'Longwood Purple' offers all the charm of a flowering wisteria in a more manageable form. Its elegant purple flower clusters and dependable summer display make it an excellent choice for adding height, fragrance and seasonal colour to the garden.
