Overview
Corylus avellana 'Contorta', commonly known as Corkscrew Hazel or Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, is a distinctive deciduous shrub grown for its wonderfully twisted branches and curled stems. During winter, when the leaves have fallen, its sculptural framework becomes a striking feature, adding structure and character to the garden.
In late winter to early spring, elegant yellow catkins hang from the contorted branches before fresh green leaves emerge. The unusual branching makes this shrub an outstanding focal point in borders, courtyard gardens and large containers, where its unique form can be appreciated throughout the year.

Growing Guide
Position
Plant in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered or open position. It makes an excellent specimen where its unusual branch structure can be viewed throughout the seasons.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it generally requires watering only during prolonged dry periods.
Soil
Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and adapts well to a range of soil types, provided they do not remain waterlogged.
Pruning
Prune only to remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. If your plant is grafted, promptly remove any straight shoots that emerge from below the graft, as these belong to the rootstock and can outgrow the contorted stems.
