Overview
Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill' is one of the finest winter-flowering shrubs, valued for its exceptionally fragrant blooms when little else is in flower. From around January to April, clusters of tubular flowers emerge from deep purplish-pink buds before opening white inside, filling the garden with rich perfume on even the coldest days.
Its upright, neatly branched habit and dark green semi-evergreen foliage provide structure throughout much of the year, making it an excellent specimen for borders or sheltered woodland-style planting. Position it close to a doorway, path or patio where its remarkable fragrance can be enjoyed throughout the flowering season.
Why We Love It
- Produces one of the most powerfully scented winter displays of any garden shrub.
- Flowers over several months when colour and fragrance are especially welcome.
- Elegant upright growth makes it suitable for mixed shrub borders and feature planting.
- Semi-evergreen foliage provides year-round garden presence in milder conditions.
- An RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient, recognised for outstanding garden performance.

Growing Guide
Position
Plant in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered location. A position protected from cold, drying winds will encourage reliable flowering and healthy growth.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly for plants grown in containers.
Soil
Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Good drainage is especially important during wet Irish winters, as prolonged waterlogging can damage the roots.
Hardiness and Winter Care
Hardy in most Irish gardens, though young plants benefit from a sheltered position. Avoid exposed sites where cold winds may damage flowers and foliage.
Routine Care
Daphne dislikes heavy pruning. Remove only dead, damaged or crossing stems after flowering and avoid disturbing established roots whenever possible.
Perfect For
- Planting beside front doors and garden entrances where the winter fragrance can be appreciated.
- Mixed shrub borders with winter and early spring interest.
- Cottage and woodland-style gardens.
- Sheltered patios and seating areas.
Good to Know
All parts of Daphne are toxic if ingested, and the sap may irritate sensitive skin. Wear gloves when pruning or handling the plant. Daphne also prefers not to be transplanted once established, so choose its planting position carefully.
