Overview
Euonymus alatus, commonly known as Winged Spindle or Burning Bush, is a deciduous shrub celebrated for one of the finest autumn foliage displays of any garden plant. During spring and summer, it forms a dense framework of fresh green leaves before transforming into vivid shades of scarlet and crimson in autumn, creating a spectacular seasonal feature.
After the leaves fall, the shrub continues to provide interest through winter with its distinctive corky ridges, or "wings", running along the branches. Its naturally rounded, bushy habit makes it equally suitable as a specimen shrub, in mixed borders or as part of planting schemes designed for exceptional autumn colour.

Growing Guide
Position
Plant in full sun or partial shade. The richest autumn foliage colour is usually achieved in a sunny position, although the shrub also performs well with some afternoon shade.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, additional watering is generally required only during prolonged dry spells.
Soil
Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. This adaptable shrub tolerates a range of soil types provided they do not remain persistently waterlogged.
Hardiness and Winter Care
Fully hardy throughout Ireland (RHS H6). The corky winged stems remain highly decorative after leaf fall, adding structure and interest throughout the winter months.
Routine Care
Pruning is rarely necessary. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter or early spring, and lightly shape the shrub if required after leaf fall.
