Plant Highlights: Large sweet-tart berries • Organically grown • Vigorous, productive canes • Self-fertile • Excellent for fresh eating, baking and preserves

Overview

Rubus × tayberry, commonly known as the Tayberry, is a vigorous cane fruit that combines the best qualities of raspberries and blackberries. It produces abundant crops of long, deep red-purple berries with a rich, aromatic flavour that balances sweetness with a pleasant tartness, making them ideal for eating fresh as well as for jams, desserts, baking and freezing.

Supplied organically grown in a 3 litre pot at approximately 55 cm tall, this productive fruit plant is an excellent choice for kitchen gardens, allotments and trained fruit gardens. Its vigorous arching canes perform best when supported on horizontal wires or a trellis, making harvesting and annual pruning straightforward.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun for the best flowering and fruit production, although light partial shade is tolerated. Choose a sheltered site and train the canes onto horizontal wires, a fence or a sturdy trellis.

Watering

Water regularly while the plant establishes and keep the soil evenly moist during flowering and fruit development. Established plants benefit from additional watering during prolonged dry spells, particularly in lighter soils.

Soil

Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Good drainage helps maintain healthy roots while consistent moisture encourages larger, better-quality fruit.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Tayberries are fully hardy and overwinter well in Irish gardens. Apply a mulch around the base in late winter to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility while avoiding excessive mulch directly against the canes.

Pruning and Crop Care

After harvesting, remove all canes that have fruited and tie in the new season's canes, which will produce next year's crop. Training the canes neatly improves air circulation, simplifies harvesting and encourages consistent cropping.

Good to Know

Tayberries are a hybrid between raspberries and blackberries and combine the flavour of both fruits. The 3 litre pot and supplied height of approximately 55 cm refer to the plant at the time of sale and not its eventual mature size.
