Asplenium antiquum 'Osaka' – Supplied in a P12 Pot

Plant Highlights: Broad, glossy green fronds • Neat rosette growth • Thrives in humid indoor environments • Excellent for bright, indirect light • Adds lush, evergreen foliage year-round

Overview

Asplenium antiquum 'Osaka', commonly known as the Bird's Nest Fern, is a striking indoor foliage plant with broad, gently wavy, glossy green fronds that emerge from a central rosette. Its fresh green foliage creates a bold yet calming display, making it an excellent choice for adding natural texture to contemporary and traditional interiors.

Unlike finely divided ferns, 'Osaka' has a strong architectural form that is easy to combine with other houseplants. It thrives in warm, humid conditions and is particularly well suited to bathrooms or kitchens with good natural light.

Soil Moist but free-draining houseplant compost

Growing Guide

Position in bright, indirect light, avoiding prolonged direct sunshine, which can scorch the fronds. Keep the compost evenly moist but never waterlogged, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering again. Water the compost rather than the centre of the rosette, as standing water in the crown can lead to rot.

This fern appreciates higher humidity, so it performs particularly well in naturally humid rooms. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser during the growing season according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Indoor Placement

'Osaka' is ideal for bathrooms with natural daylight, where humidity helps keep the foliage lush and healthy. It also performs well in bright living rooms and offices, provided it is kept away from radiators, air conditioning vents and cold draughts.

Good to Know

Remove any damaged or ageing fronds at the base to maintain a tidy appearance. Wipe the leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth if needed to remove dust and keep the foliage looking fresh.
