Sow seed on the surface of a good free draining compost and cover seed with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Seal container inside a polythene bag and place at 15-20°C (59-68°F) until after germination which usually takes 14-30 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after risk of frost, 60cm (24in) apart. Always ensure good drainage, mulch with compost in autumn. Plants flower the following year. Can also be sown outdoors where they are to flower, 1.5mm (1/16in) deep, in rows 30cm (12in) apart. Later thin out to 60cm (24in) apart.
